Abstract

Rare diseases are diseases that affect a small number of people when compared to the general population. In the United States, a rare disease is defined as a disease or condition that affects fewer than 200,000 individuals. Seven thousand rare diseases are known and are estimated to affect 25 to 30 million Americans. Of those seven thousand rare diseases, only approximately 5 percent have treatments.
